SENSATION
A Superhero Novel

Like millions of other kids, Jim grew up wanting to be a superhero.  Unlike most of his contemporaries, however, Jim actually had the goods: a plethora of superpowers that would have been the envy of any meta on the planet.  But when his tryout with the Alpha League - the world's premiere group of supers - goes disastrously wrong, Jim basically becomes an outcast.

Two years later, Jim is still bitter about what happened to him.  However, he soon finds himself the centerpiece in an odd turn of events that gives him a second chance at his dream.  But nothing is as easy as it sounds, as Jim soon discovers.  Among other things, he's made an enemy of a prospective super teammate, he's being stalked by an unknown pursuer, and a shadowy cabal bent on world domination has identified him as the only obstacle to their plans.

It's a lot for one super to handle, even with a smorgasbord of abilities.  But if saving the world was easy, everyone would do it...

WARDEN
Book 1:  Wendigo Fever

Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting ordinary people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men.  However, despite being descended from a long line of Wardens, 16-year-old Errol Magnus believes it to be the absolute worst job on the planet:  How could a single occupation simultaneously be the most boring, abominably stupid and extraordinarily dangerous profession imaginable?

But when his older brother Tom - the current Warden for their region - goes missing, Errol has no choice but to enter the Badlands (where monsters abide in mind-boggling numbers) to find him.  During his search, Errol crosses paths with - and finds himself hunted by - the legendary Wendigo, a monster with preternatural strength and speed, as well as enhanced sight, smell and hearing...and an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

Now Errol must do the impossible and not only escape from the monster (something no one has ever done before), but also avoid the unearthly legacy it leaves on all its victims: a terrifying curse known as Wendigo Fever.

Having saved the planet and earned a place with the world's premiere superhero team, Jim (aka Kid Sensation) is preparing to attend the prestigious Academy, where teen supers from every corner of the globe learn to master their abilities. At the same time, however, he is approached by a mysterious government organization that wants Jim to work for them - and they won't take "No" for an answer.

Moreover, at the Academy itself, an insidious and highly contagious virus is running amok through the student population, striking at the heart of their abilities. Students are losing control of their powers, with lethal consequences...

Now, in addition to evading the machinations of government agents, Jim must solve the mystery behind the virus - and how to stop it - before every super everywhere becomes fatally infected.

A Kid Sensation Story

Everyone needs help occasionally - even supers with amazing powers - and Jim (aka Kid Sensation) is no exception. Having previously received aid from a young psychic named Rudi, Jim feels obligated to return to the favor and rescue her from the federal facility where she’s being held.

But breaking into a top-secret, heavily-fortified government installation is never walk in the park, especially when said installation has top-of-the-line security systems, trigger-happy guards, and its own team of formidable supers. It will take a bold and audacious plan to get Jim - and the friends who volunteer to help him - inside.

Unfortunately, breaking in is only half the problem (and the easy half, at that); they also have to break back out…

Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting the people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men.

Despite his personal dislike for the job, Errol Magnus has faithfully carried out the daunting (and singularly dangerous) duties of Warden for their region in place of his missing brother Tom. Truth be told, despite his reluctance in accepting the role, there is no one better suited for it in terms of knowledge, training and skill.

Arriving home after an extended sojourn in the Badlands, where monsters are as common as blades of grass, Errol longs for just a single day to pass that doesn’t require him to put his life in danger. His desire for a respite, however, is complicated by two things: the arrival of a mysterious troupe of performers - and the appearance of a bloodthirsty creature that kills its victims in a horribly gruesome fashion.

Now Errol must determine what connection - if any - exists between the troupe and the killings, as well as find a way to stop the monster before the body count goes any higher.

A Kid Sensation Novel

Having a surfeit of super powers is great for battling bad guys and saving the world, as Jim (aka Kid Sensation) is finding out, but less useful in dealing with day-to-day situations - like bonding with his superhero father, adjusting to a team environment, and coping with what might be perceived as a growing rivalry between himself and another teen super. On top of all that, despite having a serious girlfriend, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to a new female super he's just met.

At the same time, some villain has just gotten himself a new toy: an unknown weapon of tremendous power that is able to strike without warning, causing unprecedented destruction and loss of life. Perhaps more terrifying, the wielders of this weapon make no demands and issue no threats; they simply attack. Even the Alpha League, the world's greatest superhero team, is not immune, suffering an assault on their very own doorsteps.

It quickly becomes clear that the only way to stop this new evil is from within. With his unique abilities, Jim is the only person capable of infiltrating the enemy's ranks. It's up to him to figure out who is behind these attacks, what they want, and find a way to stop them - and their secret weapon - before they bring the world to its knees.

Infiltration is available at Amazon.comBarnes&NobleKobo, iTunes, and Smashwords (for Sony, et al.).

WARDEN (BOOK 3: ATTACK OF THE ASWANG)

Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting the people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men.

For most of his life, 16-year-old Errol Magnus categorically rejected the idea of being a Warden. Growing up right next to the Badlands, he encountered enough bloodthirsty monsters in the ordinary course of events; he’d never seen much sense in assuming a post that required you to actively seek them out.

Recently, however, while competently and capably serving as Warden on behalf of his missing brother Tom, Errol’s had a change of heart. Now, for reasons of his own, he desperately wants the position. Unfortunately, being officially appointed Warden not only requires that Errol’s skills be tested by his peers, but that he also make a perilous journey to the city of Apolos in order to be examined by the High Warden himself.

Traveling with a group of colleagues, Errol thinks all danger is behind them once they reach the safety of the city. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Something has followed them out of the Badlands, and - one by one - his traveling companions are being viciously slain by something…inhuman. It’s up to Errol to find the creature and bring its killing spree to a halt, before he himself winds up the next victim.

Warden (Book 3) is available at Amazon.comBarnes&NobleKobo, and iTunes.

Fringe Worlds #1

Master Sergeant Gant Maker was a highly-decorated and well-respected Marine - until his last mission left him as the sole survivor of an encounter with a vicious race called the Vacra. Served up as a scapegoat and drummed out of the military, he has since lived a life of seclusion with only an adopted alien as a companion.

Now the Vacra have returned. As the only person to have ever faced them and survived, Maker is reinstated in the Corps and given the onerous task of finding this enemy on a world located at the edge of known space. Assisting him is an unlikely band of military rejects, including a blind sharpshooter, an unstable psychic, and a genetically-engineered killing machine who refuses to fight.

Given that the Vacra have superior weapons and technology, Maker recognizes that his team is at a distinct disadvantage. But Marines are nothing if not resourceful, and Maker has an audacious plan that just may level the playing field – if it doesn’t get them all killed.

A Kid Sensation Novel

The pressure of being a super – especially a teen super – can get to anyone, as Jim (aka Kid Sensation) has witnessed firsthand. Now he wonders if he himself might be succumbing to the strain in some way, as he can’t shake the feeling that he is now being watched by some new stalker. Moreover, despite his wide slate of powers, he hasn’t been able to discover to a single clue to substantiate the existence of this potential new enemy, making him wonder if it’s all in his head.

Looking forward to a few days of R&R and hanging out with his friends, Jim’s downtime is interrupted by the unsettling news that Alpha Prime, the world’s greatest superhero (and Jim’s father), is missing. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Jim finds his world rocked by an even more ominous revelation: his deranged half-brother, Paramount, has escaped from confinement in a maximum security installation.

In the course of investigating these events and trying to ascertain what connection, if any, there is between them, Jim becomes privy to information concerning a potent alien device capable of laying waste to the entire planet. But he’s not the only one - an enigmatic villain wants the alien technology for his own purposes, and it’s up to Jim to find a way to stop him before the world pays the ultimate price.

A Kid Sensation Novel

As the grandson of the alien princess Indigo, Jim (aka Kid Sensation) has always known that, technically, he’s royalty. That said, he’d be the first to admit that he’s never lived any kind of regal lifestyle – no titles, no castles, no crown jewels… However, the arrival of a courier from his grandmother’s homeworld changes all of that in an instant.

By royal edict, Jim is summoned “home” to the distant planet Caeles in order to claim an alien inheritance. Unfortunately, this is no warm and cuddly family reunion. Caeles is a hotbed of political intrigue, and Jim’s arrival has widespread ramifications. Not only are several factions attempting to utilize his very existence as leverage to advance their own agendas, but Jim himself is required to submit to an archaic trial known as a prexetus. Moreover, while some are content with simply trying to use him, it quickly becomes apparent that at least one shadowy individual just wants Jim out of the way – quickly, completely, and permanently.

Light years from Earth, with little family and fewer friends, Jim faces the daunting task of finding an enemy whose ultimate purpose is unknown and whose methods are extreme. Complicating matters even further is the fact that Jim’s much-heralded super powers are glitching, making him incredibly vulnerable for perhaps the first time in his life.

  1. I hope you have the new book out by summer because if you don't I might die.
And please don't make this one a companion book. You literally left off the fifth book on a cliff hanger and then made two companion books. That's like stabbing someone and then pushing the knife in deeper. Other than that love your books keep up the good work.

Not bad. I don't know why, but Electra isn't my favorite character, but it was still a good story.

If Vestibule wants to use "legalese" to hold Jim to the date, he needs to use it right back. Smokey never said it would be just the two of them on their date (sorry, outing). "High Vestibule. You know my girlfriend Electra, allow me to introduce my fiancee Istaria. Don't worry, standing next to them doesn't make you look TOO plain. You'll get used to it."

    1. LOL! You know, I do have a bunch of books that I've started writing but haven't finished. (Sometimes the urge to write - even if it's just part of a story - is so powerful I just have to put pen to paper, so to speak.) So I've basically got lots of stuff lying around: zombie apocalypse, urban fantasy, shifter, scifi, epic fantasy. Hmmm...maybe I'll publish an excerpt from one of those - maybe even a couple of them, and then let readers decide which one they'd like me to finish first.

  6. Thanks for the words of support - and for putting my books in such esteemed company. In addition to Kindle versions, the books are already out in print and audio; the only mediums left are television and film, and it is notoriously difficult to get films and TV shows made. Still, I can dream, right?

  7. I wanted to offer a quick apology for those who posted comments on this page that it's taken me a while to respond to. Blogger, as I understand it, basically has a glitch or something whereby - even though new comments are being posted - it won't actually load them on the page. Thus, even though I'd get notice when a new comment was posted, I couldn't actually see them. I've tinkered around a bit today and finally come across a process that lets me see and reply to recent comments, but it's still not working 100%. But at least now I can respond to any comments in a timely fashion.

  8. Why can't I see any posts after March 5?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Blogger apparently has a glitch whereby - after a post reaches 200 comments - new comments may not show up. That appears to be what's happening here. (The March 5 post is #200.) The easiest fix seems to be to be to go into "Settings" and change the Comments from "Embedded" to either "Full Page" or "Popup Window." Although that will allow all comments to show, you can't tell who is responding to what and the Comments section becomes kind of a mess unless you keep a scorecard of some kind.

There seem to be a couple of fixes that involve going into the template and screwing around with the HTML, but I haven't gotten around to that yet. Instead, what I've done (for the moment) is change the comments section to display "Newest," which allows the most recent comments to be shown, starting with #201. It's far from ideal, but it will allow the most recent comments (and responses thereto) to be seen. The tradeoff is that I lose 200 comments that go back years (not that many people are reading them in cradle-to-grave fashion).

  9. Due to it being summer now I have been rereading your books and have come across questions that I didn't have before. Since I assume they may be answered eventually I don't expect answers or at least straight ones. First of all I was wondering how Jim's abilities compare to others. I know he has many powers but compared to other speedsters is he fast and the same goes for flight and so on. Next, why can he understand rune in the first book. Next, what are Electra's or smokie's names. Lastly, are Paramount's powers the same as AP's in the sense that when attacked in a new way he adapts to it. If you can't answer these than I really look forward to finding the answer in your future books.

  11. The question of Jim's powers in comparison to others brings to mind a scene from the 1995 movie "The Quick and the Dead," which is about gunfighters duelling to the death. Near the end of the film, the main antagonist tells the protagonist (played by Sharon Stone) that she can't win the duel they're about to have because she isn't faster than him. Her reply is, "I am today."

In short, whether Jim is, say, faster than another speedster may simply come down to who's more motivated at that particular point in time.

Unfortunately, I don't quite understand your question about Rune. Can you clarify?

Electra's name is revealed in the novel "Amped: A Kid Sensation Compnion Novel." I'm debating whether to provide Smokey's real name in Kid Sensation #6, but may hold off on the big reveal until he gets his own story. As to Paramount, I would argue that his powers haven't been fully cataloged yet.

    1. I believe the poster above is referring to the teleport scene when tune starts off speaking gobbledegook and Jim is able to understand Jim at the end. Was the end simply in english, or was some strange thing happening?

    2. Got it. I think the implication is that Rune did something to make his words understood by those present. On a side note, Rune plays a very prominent role in KS#7 (working title, "Incarnation")

    3. That was kind of the impression I got, that something about crossing the dimensional barrier magically (that is, magically crossing it) somehow changed or broke down the mystic effect and translated it to him. Though it would make for an interesting twist of his abilities allowed him a cognitive edge and exposure let him pick up the mystic arts almost by osmosis. But then he would be too over the top in terms of ability.

    1. I hesitate to put a date on it, because I'm infamous for busting deadlines. I guess saying it's being pushed back on the timetable is probably the best way to put it.

Frankly speaking, I'm the busiest I've been in years at the day job, and that's taking its toll in terms of my writing. On top of that, the kids are growing up, so there's music lessons, recitals, scout meetings, soap box derbies, etc.

All that aside, I am - needless to say - still working on KS #6 and will get it out as soon as possible.

    1. I'm trying to finish now. As soon as that's done, I still have to get it to my editor, get a cover made, etc. In short, we're probably talking at least a month from whatever date I wrap up the writing. (And with respect to the audiobook, it might be another two months from that - depending on how busy my narrator is.)

  19. I hate to be pushy but can we get an update on book 6's publication timetable? Please? Or at least an idea of where you are in the process? I am on pins and needles, and apparently have been for two years. Starting to go numb...
No rush though, quality before ...timeliness (not sure if that's the best choice of word, but you get the idea, I'm sure) and you have always delivered on quality.
