I promise, I'm working as fast as I can to get the next book out. In the meantime, here's another excerpt:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With Myshtal
promising not to foretell any more of the action, we went back to watching the
movie. However, we’d only been watching a few minutes when the phone rang.
There was a cordless extension in the theater room, and – knowing that Mom was
working and that my grandparents were probably in bed – I teleported the phone
into my hand.
I switched the
phone on and gave a perfunctory “Hello.”
“Hey,
handsome,” said a honeyed feminine voice on the other end of the line.
“Hey,” I
replied as I came to my feet, smiling at hearing my girlfriend’s voice. I
gestured to Myshtal that I needed to take this call, then began walking towards
the door after she nodded in acknowledgement.
“What are you
doing?” Electra asked.
“Thinking about
you, of course.” I stepped out of the theater room and closed the door behind
me.
“Good answer,”
Electra said, giggling. As always, her laughter was intoxicating and
infectious, making me chuckle along with her. “Seriously though, are you busy?”
“No – just
watching a movie.”
“Feel like
hanging out?”
“Is that a
trick question?” I asked, causing her to laugh again. I had rarely, if ever,
turned down a chance to spend time with her. “Should I pop by your house?”
“No, not
tonight,” she said, causing me to frown in confusion. Why ask me to hang out if
she really didn’t want to? Then she added, “Just buzz me in.”
“Huh?” I
muttered, more confused than before.
“Buzz me in,”
she repeated. “I’m at the gate.”
Smiling now, I
pressed the digits on the phone that would cause the large, wrought-iron gate
at the embassy entrance to open.
“Be there in a
sec,” I said, barely waiting for Electra to acknowledge my statement before
hanging up the phone and setting it on a nearby table. I then teleported outside, to the bottom of a
wide stoop which consisted of about a dozen set stone steps that led up the
embassy’s front door.
It was a rather
dark night; what little illumination there was came mostly from a couple of
ornate post lights – one at each end at the foot of the stoop. Looking down the
driveway, I saw a pair of headlights headed in my direction. A few moments later, a car pulled to a stop
in front of me, the engine turned off, and Electra got out.
She was dressed
in jeans, black boots, gloves, and a hooded parka that neatly framed her face. Seeing
her bundled up made me mindful of the fact that it was chilly outside and a
stiff breeze was blowing. As was typical, Electra wasn’t wearing makeup, but
she had an inherent, natural beauty that didn’t need to be enhanced by
cosmetics.
We moved
towards each other, both of us smiling, and then shared a short kiss as we met.
Eyes twinkling, Electra moved closer and wrapped her arms around me as I
embraced her as well.
“Well, this is
disappointing,” she droned a second later. Rubbing her hands quickly up and
down the sides of my torso, she added, “Come on – do your thing.”
I laughed,
understanding what she meant. On cold days, when I haven’t dressed
appropriately for the weather, I tend to compensate by raising my body
temperature. On this particular, I had come outside without grabbing so much as a
light jacket. However, I hadn’t been outside long enough for the cold to start
to affect me. Nevertheless, I did as requested and raised my core body
temperature.
“That’s my guy,” Electra intoned,
snuggling in close and placing her head against my chest. She had explained
before that being next to me when I was like this was akin to cuddling next to
a warm, cozy fire with a blizzard raging outside. “You’re so nice and toasty that I could stay
like this forever.”
She then looked
up and gave me a kiss – this time longer and more lingering than before. When
we separated, breathless, a few moments later, she smiled and then pulled in
close to me again.
“You know,” I
said, “You didn’t have to drive all the way over here. I would have been happy
to come to you.”
“I know,” she admitted,
“but I wanted to. You shouldn’t have to come to me all the time.”
I smiled but
didn’t say anything, understanding what the meaning was behind her actions. In
terms of spending time together, Electra had once equated dating me to having a
rich boyfriend: sure, the guy could afford to pay every time they went out, but
occasionally the girl wants to – if only to show the guy what he means to her. That’s why she had chosen to drive and see me
on a cold, dark night rather than have me come to her (which, frankly speaking
would have been much easier). Basically,
it was a way of telling me I was worth it, and I loved her for it.
“So, how’d the
mission go?” she asked, breaking my chain of thought. She also stepped back
slightly as she posed the question, allowing us to see eye-to-eye.
“Uh…” I
muttered. “It’s a bit of a mixed report, to be honest.”
I then
telepathically shared with her the pertinent mission details. As expected, she
groaned in disapproval at certain actions on my part. Upon finishing, I decided
not to give her an opportunity to verbalize any criticisms.
“So,” I blurted
out, “how was your shopping jaunt?”
“Nice try at
changing the subject,” she said, making it understood that she knew what I was
trying to do. “But it was fine. I think I found the perfect dress.”
“Oh? What does
it look like?”
She laughed.
“No, no, no, no. You’re going to have to wait until tomorrow. I want to see the
look on your face when you first catch a glimpse of me in it.”
I frowned.
“Well, how does telling what it looks like change that? I still won’t see you
in it until tomorrow.”
“Because I want
your complete reaction. I won’t get that if you have an idea of what to
expect.”
I shook my
head, nonplussed. “Smokey’s right. I really don’t
understand women.”
Electra laughed
at that. “Good. That’s the way I like it.”
I raised an
eyebrow inquisitively. “You want me
confused about women?”
She grinned.
“No. I just don’t want you thinking you fully understand me, because the second that happens you’ll–”
Electra stopped
abruptly as the sound of hinges creaking drew the attention of us both. Almost
in unison, we separated and looked towards the top of the steps – to the front
door of the embassy. With light from the
interior behind her, we watched in silence as Myshtal stepped out.
Almost
immediately, there was tension in the air. More to the point, where there had
been lighthearted mirth and amusement a moment before, I now felt a flurry of
heated emotions coming from Electra that included resentment, spite, and
annoyance (to name a few).
Myshtal wrapped
her arms around herself against the cold. At that moment I noticed she appeared
to be wearing something short, sheer and form-fitting. She obviously hadn’t
dressed for the weather, which suggested she wouldn’t be out here long –
something I considered a blessing.
“Hello,
Electra,” Myshtal said, giving my girlfriend a congenial wave. “It’s nice to
see you again.”
“Yeah – you,
too,” Electra said flatly, although her tone suggested that it was anything but nice.
It was
undoubtedly a cool reception on my girlfriend’s part, but about the best that
could be hoped for under the circumstances. Ever since their initial meeting
after I returned from Caeles – and had to tell Electra about my contracted
nuptials – the relationship between the two had been nothing short of frosty.
“I’m sorry for
intruding,” Myshtal said, turning to me, “but I just wanted to ask if you
wanted me to pause the movie, Jim?”
I felt, rather
than saw, Electra jerk her head in my direction. At the same time, a volcano of
emotions erupted within her – mostly bitterness and displeasure, blanketed by
layers of anger and frustration.
“Uh, no,” I
said, purposely avoiding looking at Electra. “You can just let it play, or
watch something else if you want.”
“Okay,” she
said with a nod. “Goodnight, Electra.”
My girlfriend
grunted something inaudible in response as Myshtal turned and headed back
inside. A moment later the door closed.
“Is that what
you were doing when I called?” she demanded. “Watching a movie, with her?”
“Yeah, we were
watching a movie,” I said defensively.
She gave me a
smoldering look. “So the two of you were having a date night?”
“What?!” I
asked, flabbergasted. “No! It was just a movie!”
“Really? So who
else was there?”
I cut my eyes
away in impotent anger. I didn’t say anything, but I didn’t have to.
“That’s what I
thought,” Electra said as she indignantly crossed her arms.
“That still
doesn’t make it a date,” I stressed.
“And what about
what she was wearing?”
“What about
it?” I asked.
“It was
practically lingerie!”
I frowned in
concentration for a moment. I hadn’t really gotten a good look at what Myshtal
was wearing when she came to the door. I
suppose it could have been a negligee…
“That’s not
what she was wearing earlier,” I insisted, and it was true. If memory served me correctly, she had
previously been dressed in some kind of skirt-and-blouse combo.
“Oh?” Electra
intoned, raising her eyebrows in faux surprise. “So you’re saying that for the
movie, she decided to slip into something more comfortable?”
“That’s not
what happened at all. You’re twisting the facts into something sordid.”
“Or maybe
you’re just being blind to the truth,” she countered. “Can’t you see what’s
going on here?”
“Yes, I can.
And what I can confirm is that there’s absolutely nothing going on.”
She shook her
head in disbelief. “You can’t be that naïve, Jim. She’s prancing around in
front of you in a negligee – you think she’s doing that for her health?”
I let out an
exasperated breath. “Even if what you’re suggesting is true – and I don’t
believe it is, but even if it were – you can’t possibly think I’d be more
interested in her than you.”
“In all
honesty, I don’t know what to think any more,” she said softly. “You two could
be doing anything, and I wouldn’t have a clue.”
I stared at her
in dumbfounded amazement for a moment. “You’re kidding, right? Between my mom,
Gramps, and my grandmother, we’ve got like a million chaperones – all of them
psychic! There’s nothing going on in that house that they don’t know about or
condone.”
Electra seemed
to mull over my statement, then let out a long sigh and said, “Okay, but why
does she even have to stay here, under the same roof as you?”
“Where else is
she going to stay? She literally knows no one else on the planet.”
“Just check her
into a hotel or something. Plus, I hear they’re fixing up a place for her at
League HQ.”
“Come on,
Electra. Only a handful of super teens have ever stayed at the League full-time.
And with her limited experience with Earth culture, I can’t just stick her in a
hotel – even a resort. I promised to
look after her.”
“Yeah,” Electra
scoffed disdainfully. “Dressed like she was a moment ago, I imagine you’re
doing a lot of looking – and not just
after.”
I bit my tongue
to avoid blurting out my instinctive response, which was to deny what was being
implied. Electra’s last statement was
bait, and any denial on my part would lead to her asking a question along the
lines of, “So you’re saying you’re not attracted to her?” Having already been painfully hooked by that
lure several times in the past few weeks, I wasn’t falling for it again.
“Look,” I said
calmly, “in addition to everything else, Myshtal is a guest in my family’s
home. Even if I was willing, they wouldn’t let me stick her away out of sight,
any more than they’d let me do it to you if your positions were reversed. And
in case you forgot, her great-great-grandmother rules an interstellar empire,
and Myshtal is her favorite. You don’t think the queen’s having her watched?
Having me watched?”
“There wouldn’t
be any watching if you hadn’t gotten
yourself into this mess,” she stated stonily. “Did you even try to say ‘No’ to
this shotgun wedding?”
“We’ve been
over this before. This was the deal I had to make to get home. Or would you
prefer that I be stuck on Caeles for decades like my grandmother?”
“What I would
prefer–”
“Shhh!” I
hissed, putting a finger to her lips. She immediately went quiet.
I looked around
warily. Just as Electra had begun
speaking, I had picked up an emotional spike from nearby – a mix of excitement
and elation mingled with trepidation. Somebody was watching us. Acting on
instinct, I stepped protectively in front of my girlfriend.
“What is it?” she
whispered.
“We’ve got eyes on
us,” I answered over my shoulder.
Lol shots fired I repeat shots fired. Our boy is down and bleeding pretty fast.
ReplyDeleteMr. Hardman you certainly deliver. Jim really needs a vacation, maybe with his uncle. Mouse has Vixen so she will make his life hell and AP is like her dad/brother so that's no bueno. Megaton needs to come to the rescue without the girls of course.
I can't say how much I want this book right now and I know your working on it besides having a day job. But as a loyal crazy fan I got to...are we talking April or May release lol. Jk
Even if it takes a little longer I'm ok with it. I wouldn't want the quality of the books to drop because we are impatient.
Thanks, I appreciate the enthusiasm and will get the book out as soon as I can.
DeleteSaw a small misspell "You're so ice and toasty" should be you're so nice and toasty"
ReplyDeleteLOL! Yes, I caught that and fixed it in the manuscript. (Forgot to mention that this excerpt came with the usual disclaimers - eg, my editor hasn't touched it yet.)
DeleteLiterally was reading and enjoying this excerpt Mr. Hardman so generously provided for us but the nerd-o in me copied and pasted the typo into a sticky note to mention. Beat me to it! :D
DeleteAnother typo, "I had come outside with(out) grabbing so much as a light jacket." Just fyi. Looking forward to reading this "SOON".
ReplyDeleteJim lists his grandmother as a chaperone in the house. So I guess that means she came to Earth, Gray won't be happy.
ReplyDeleteI think someone inquired in another blog comment about Indigo's whereabouts, so good catch. But yes, she's back on Earth.
DeleteSo either indigo convinced her relatives to allow her to return to earth or she stowed away or jim can teleport across a huge expanse of space. Hope it's the last one.
DeleteYou should be more carefull what clips you give us.
DeleteLOL. I'm just glad readers are enjoying the excerpts.
DeleteDefinitely not the teleport thing. If he could just teleport home, he'd have done it instead of getting coerced into marrying Myshtal in exchange for a ride home and continued diplomat status.
DeleteNow you just need to hurry up and put it out. I am rereading the series in preparation for the release.
ReplyDeleteWorking on it...
Delete12 books out and still working a day job. Damn are you some go getter or what... so need next book.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to get it done, but that day job (among other things) keeps interfering.
DeleteSome quick food for thought, does Reilly Kebosh have the same powers as Myshtal, as both there powers "find" things? Also, have you ever considered writing a short story on the orgines of BT, as us readers don't know a whole lot about him/her?
ReplyDeleteI would argue that the two have a variation of the same power, as their ability things is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
DeleteHmmm...I honestly haven't given much thought to an origin story for BT. (I mean, I have a background for the character; I just haven't thought about developing it into its own story.) That said, I have contemplated additional short stories along the lines of "Extraction," as well as a few about some of the other characters.
Yes, please stuck to short stories. It really annoys me when writers publsh side novellas for a series they haven't finished yet. Can't wait for #6!
DeleteI think I honestly check at least once a day for the new kid sensation, I just happened to search google for you to see if you had a blog or Facebook like another enjoyable author Michael Scott Earle. Glad I found this, nice little pick me up until the next book comes out. Kudos for writing books that people crave enough to go a bit creeper for
ReplyDeleteIt should be in the front- and back-matter of my books, but in addition to this blog, I do have Twitter and a FB page.
DeleteAs to the book, I'm trying to finish it but I've been completely swamped lately by the day job and other things, but I'm still trying to get it out there asap.
Do you think we will know more about th backgrounds of BT (assuming there won't be a short story), Li, Megaton, etc? Also, do you think a short story on Alpha Prime and Megaton is a good idea? (I mention all these short story ideas as I would find it interesting to find out more about these characters backgrounds, like the short story on Mouse). Also, is Rudi planning to make another appearance?
ReplyDeleteFinally, one thing that has always got me thinking is how Kane, Gossamer, and Li made it into the academy before it got destroyed. I figured Kane and Gossamer still classified as heroes as they practice magic and can still do heros work, but Li doesn't seem to have any powers? Is there more to him that meets the eye?(I'm not saying he's not useful, but it doesn't seem like he has any powers so I question why he needed to go to the academy to learn how to use them) Sorry for the bombardment of questions, your books always keep me thinking.
Megaton is a pretty interesting guy and has what I'd consider to be an engaging backstory. I've got a story in mind for him, but haven't decided yet how much of an appearance Alpha Prime would make. There will definitely be more about Rudi.
DeleteI haven't decided yet how much of Li's background to reveal. It's probably a little different than what people would expect, but I will certainly drop clues in future books. Right now, though, he's not on the short list to get his own story in the immediate future - maybe down the road. As to his powers - which admittedly have not been on display much since "Mutation" - he's an android so he's going to be stronger and faster than any human. (For those who've ever seen the old TV show "The Six Million Dollar Man" - you can think of him along those lines: Better, stronger, faster...
Of course, the main character of the show was a cyborg rather than an android, but you get the gist.) With respect to attending the Academy, the place wasn't just about learning to use one's powers; it was also about the things that can make heroes more effective, like learning to work with a team, how to minimize civilian casualties during a battle, threat assessment, etc. Last but not least - and you hit upon this already - but we haven't seen everything Li can do.
(And just as sidebar conversation, I hear they're making a movie based on "The Six Million Dollar Man" which - as anyone would have guessed, given inflation - will be titled "The Six Billion Dollar Man")
Do you think you’ll do more with what we saw forwards the end of book 5
ReplyDeleteMy apologies - I don't appear to be getting notices any more when someone posts a comment, so I'm only just seeing this. That said, I'm not quite sure how to interpret your question. If you mean more about the J'h'dgo/John Indigo connection, the answer is "Yes."
DeleteAlso thanks for sticking with the series love your books
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement - glad you like them.
DeleteAny update on ETA? Can't wait for next book!
ReplyDeleteThe day job is eating me alive - I'm even working on days I'm supposed to be off. I'm trying to wrap up, but finding the time is becoming more difficult.
DeleteI feel your pain. Hope it gets better soon! Any chance we can get an update roughly a week before this book gets published? I want to finish my re-read of the previous books before starting this next one. Thanks!
DeleteI'll let readers know the second I finish and fire it off to my editor. (Of course, that's typically about a month in advance of the actual publication date - depending on when I get it back.) Regardless, I will keep everyone apprised.
DeleteOut of curiosity, what's your day job? Is that something you're comfortable disclosing?
DeleteSad to say I think I'm going to stop bothering to check any more. really do love this series, and it got me into the superhero book genre in general but 6 months of promises is too much for me, good luck in your future writing Mr. Hardman you gave me some great stories.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your candor and certainly understand. I hope that when I do release the next book your interest will be piqued enough to pick up a copy. Regardless, thanks for your support.
DeleteI am very much looking forward to this book! I've read all of the other ones as soon as they've come out and love this series. Thank you for the excerpts - haha they keep me checking back frequently to see if there's an update ;). I imagine it will be well worth the wait.
ReplyDeleteThanks - I think readers will definitely be pleased with the final product, and I appreciate your patience.
DeleteHey can we get an update?
ReplyDeleteStill working on it, but the day job has become a beast of late. However, I'm at a point where I can see light at the end of the tunnel, although "soon" is as much as I risk saying at this point.
DeleteThe last post was in April, and it's now the later half of June. Any updates?
ReplyDeleteI'm close to being done, but I hesitate to put a date on it. As I've mentioned before, about the best I ca say is "soon."
DeleteJust wanted to mention that your series is one of my favorites and I am honestly so glad you said you were planning on writing this series in perpetuity. Keep up the great work and I hope you enjoy writing them as much as I enjoy reading them!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement. I already have working titles for books 7 and 8, so more are definitely on the horizon.
DeleteYou have always been so prompt in getting new books and in responding on social media. Therefore, I am worried you are in a difficult social, work, legal or financial situation. Hope you are well and that you reach your objective soon to be a full time author.
ReplyDeleteOne of your many obnoxious fans.
LOL! Thanks, I truly appreciate the concern but can assure you that I'm not in a dire situation. As to not responding on social media, Google has stopped informing me when there's a post, so I had no idea people were leaving comments. As to getting new books out, the day job has just kept me monstrously busy of late, and that's eaten into th writing time. That said, I'm focused on getting the next book out asap.
DeleteSeveral indie authors I follow post a weekly or bi weekly word count .It's a easy update and makes no promises.
ReplyDeleteLOL. I've considered putting up a progress bar or something along those lines. The problem is, I honestly have no idea ho long a book will be when I start writing. I mean, I have a rough idea, but when I start getting into nuts and bolts, a lot of things change. That said, I will probably do something along those lines to keep readers apprised after I finish this one.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteMy current theory is he got abducted by aliens and that's why he has disappeared
ReplyDeleteLOL! No, no abductions, alien "probing" or anything like that. I just wasn't aware that comments were accumulating on the blog. (Google apparently doesn't make you aware of that stuff any more.) I'll be more attentive, but trying to keep up will mean going to every blog post I have to check for comments. Hmmm... I'll check around and see if there's some workaround that isn't as tedious.
DeleteI don't get why people are worried/complaining about no updates. The man has a day job and family that takes most of his time.
ReplyDeleteThe last time he published something was on 10/30/2017 Efferus and that same year in Feb we got Mouse's book. It hasn't been a year yet since the last book of his came out. Most authors take around a year or so between their books.
We are lucky of the pace his got, some other authors take years between publication. GRRM the most common example.
So trust in Alpha Author and chill. Before you know it an update will come or even better a release date. He knows we love his work and he will get out to us when it's out of the oven. Those are just my two pennies on the subject
^Agreed.
DeleteI dunno...the alien abduction theory sounds pretty good at this point.
DeleteThanks - I appreciate the words of support. Oddly enough (and I've mentioned this before), I actually am a pretty fast writer: I think the first year I started publishing my fiction I was able to write the first three Kid Sensation novels, Extraction, and the three Warden books. These days, it's just a matter of finding the time, but I will certainly try to regain my old form
DeleteDang! Here I was hoping you would come back and tell us you were abducted and forced to fight gladiator style for the freedom of the universe. Would have been a cooler excuse than real life got in the way. Oh well. I will still wait impatiently.
DeleteMaybe he could write a kinda mini story about something like that with jim
DeleteLOL. Rather tahn alien abduction, I was tempted to say that I labor under an ancient family curse whereby every 7 years I undergo a hideous transformation and turn into an ancient beast for one cycle of the moon. Oh well...
DeleteAs for Jim in gladiatorial combat, the thought has crossed my mind but I think other characters in the Kid Sensation universe are better suited for it. For Jim, it would have to be a fairly unique situation (although I have one in mind that would work).
Haha yea give us a thor vs hulk battle for the ages type fight that would be epic.
DeleteI like the idea of alien abduction. But I must point out that he promised us months ago to have this book out and empty promises are never to be believed again.
ReplyDeleteI did make that commitment, and I'm sincerely sorry that I haven't been able to keep it. My hope at this juncture is that the next book (and those that follow) will be worth the wait.
DeleteAuthors do this all the time in my experience they promise a release and then something happens writers block personall stuff another book getting suddenly pushed before this one whatever and the book gets pushed back and partially forgotten I for one don't begrudge the wait I just hope he's ok.
ReplyDeleteThe good news is that it isn't writer's block. (Frankly speaking, I've got more ideas for books than I know what to do with.) My issue is simply carving out enough time out of each day to make meaningful progress. Long story short, I'm okay and committed to getting this book dine in short order.
DeleteSounds great glad to hear from ya.
DeleteNot trying to be greedy but can we get like a cover reveal or another excerpt??
ReplyDeleteLOL. I appreciate the eagerness and don't consider it greed at all. Unfortunately, I usually don't get started on the cover until the book is completely done. The cover for the print version has to meet certain specs, which can't be calculated until the book is done (not to mention that the audio cover has to be a true square). In essence, I prefer to wait and get all aspects of the cover done at one time as opposed to piecemeal.
DeleteRegarding another excerpt, I'm not adverse to the idea, but I've never posted three before so I worry that I might be giving away too much of the plot. (Also, I feel that I'm close enough to being done that there might not be much of a value-add.) That said, I can probably find a passage that's intriguing enough to pique the interest of readers but innocuous enough not to give away any of the central plot.
(Hmmm... I'm actually tempted to post an excerpt from a new, unpublished series, but I'm still debating that. It's like you've got an audience screaming for Elvis - what happens if Engelbert Humperdinck steps on the stage? Even if he's just the opening act, someone might start throwing tomatos.)
Let me think about it.
Well if you're close enough to being done then you should probably hold off. But you know always excited to read new content
DeleteI'm with Reader on this one. If it's close to been finished then hold on to it and race to the finish line lol.
DeleteAlthough that new unpublished series, getting some of that might wet their appetites for something new and maybe at the end of the new thing maybe a paragraph or two of KD that way everyone is happy. Just my thoughts on the matter. I'm ok with either.
Yea I'm with them on this if it's that close to being done I'd say bring out the new material instead so long as you let the fans know it's coming no one gonna dislike a brand new opening act.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteWell I want trying to be rude or keep hounding him. Just like to keep the convedrsation going.
ReplyDeleteFeel free to hound; I don't consider it rude, and I'm happy readers are engaged.
DeleteRandom question. Alpha Prime's powers are adaptive in nature and the power set that kid has really makes no sense unless his powers are adaptive on nature too. So are kids powers an adaptiion to specific threats he has faced or will face?
ReplyDeleteIn like all of the books, Jim figures out either new powers or new aspects to his power set. I believe that really his powers are just adaptive to the nature of the threat he faces. Thats why he has redundant powers, he doesn't really need speed and teleportation at the same time, but there probably was a time where one was a better option than the others.
DeleteI feel like their is one thing missing to his power set which is some sort of energy blast
ReplyDeleteHopefully it's something like a specialized version of the bolt blast. But maybe not from the eyes.
ReplyDeleteI say take as long as you need. Excerpts aren’t a mandatory thing it’s just great that you do them to help readers with the time between your books. Put one out if that’s what you want or we can all suck it up and wait for the book.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I appreciate that. In all honesty, though, I'm trying to get KS6 wrapped up.
DeleteI'm wondering how no one has the power to adapt, I mean to adapt to any situation or is that just the natural development of powers.
ReplyDeleteI don't quite understand the question. Can you elaborate?
DeleteIt's been a while since the last update, how's everything going?
ReplyDeleteEverything's going well, but much more slowly than I imagined. And again, I fell into the trap of thinking that I would get notifications when comments were posted, but that didn't happen (although I think the issue is finally resolved). Still trying to finish KS6, needless to say.
DeleteI myself would love a new post even if it was just an 'I'm very busy but working on writing when I can otherwise all is well' sort of thing.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to hold out so that the next post would be of the "Finished!" variety, but haven't gotten there yet. But I've certainly got plenty of other stuff I can post, so I'll find something...
DeleteThis is starting to look like a winds of winter siyuation
ReplyDeleteOkay, that actually did make me laugh out loud! But no, we aren't quite there yet (and hopefully won't get there).
Deletelol imagine if you both release on the same day by some coincidence. Which one do i read first? Biggest dilemma ever.
DeleteSo is there going to be a break up?
ReplyDeleteThat's the million dollar question. All I can say is, stay tuned...
DeleteWhat I don't get is going from the book is nearly done to 4 months of absolutely nothing
ReplyDeleteThat's a valid criticism. I actually expected to have this book done 6 months ago, so it is almost just as frustrating to me that I haven't finished it. Thankfully, it's not writer's block or anything along those lines. For the most part, it's simply that the day job has me busier than ever.
DeleteI would love just a response like hey I'm alive and the book is coming along
ReplyDeleteLOL. I'm alive, and the book's coming along.
DeleteSeriously though, I'm almost there.
Thank you Mr Hardman. I appreciate that you're replying to comments
ReplyDeleteNo problem. I'm just happy that readers are engaged.
DeleteDo you think that you'll ever do a guidebook for the Kid Sensation universe???
ReplyDeleteI've debated having a compendium or codex of sorts, but at this juncture I'm not sure that not enough of the KS universe has been published for it to be meaningful. For instance, there are some characters that have been mentioned in passing that I'd like to flesh out a little more via novels rather than simply publishing their bios.
Deletewhen will KS#6 will be released?
ReplyDeleteThat's the question of the day. I'm honestly trying to finish it as quickly as possible (which explains why I'm writing this in the wee hours), but time keeps getting away from me. (As always, the blame goes to the day job.)
DeleteWhat kind of job takes up this much time? I ask as a lawyer who is always busy.
ReplyDeleteObviously I know the wrong people, because I can think of a dozen occupations that can eat up similar gobs of time. For instance, I have a distant relation who's a doctor, and there was a point in time when he always seemed to be either at the hospital or on his way there. I have a friend in IT, and when they're installing or upgrading a system for a client, he's been known to work 16-hour days for weeks on end. I know a corporate exec who is constantly on the road, either speaking on panels or educating employees on company policy. Finally, I also know a few lawyers, but being one yourself you're aware of how busy they can get, so 'nuf said. Basically, like the friends I mentioned, I'm in one of those busy cycles at work, but it's far busier than it's ever been in the past, and it's just not clear when things will return to "normal" (which is busy enough).
DeleteWill there be a book about Vixen in the future. She's one of my favorite female League members, and I will love to know more about her.And does she have some kind of augmented/enhanced strength
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I don't know that I've given a lot of thought to a full-length novel about Vixen (who does have super strength), but she was going to feature prominently in a couple of short stories I have in mind. As to characters who I anticipate giving the novel treatment to - and I'm speaking of League members as opposed to Kid Sensation's circle of friends (eg, Smokescreen) - there's Feral, another Mouse book for sure, and Alpha Prime. (That last is tricky though, because I'll probably have to reveal some things about AP that have only been hinted at in previous books.) However, there is a storyline aout Vixen that would be a pretty good novel, but I'd have to figure out where it fits in the timeline.
DeleteIn a proposed AP book, would you reveal the reason for him not being around in Jim's life. Like I know it was mentioned that he didnt want to raise him in the public spotlight but that wouldn't really get in the way of visiting him right?
DeleteA book about Feral sounds amazing, He gives me beast vibes and I would like to know more about him☺☺And THANKS so much for replying back. keep up the good can't wait till KS#6 Come out.
Deleteany idea on when the next book will come out? like, what percent of the book have you finished?
ReplyDeletereally looking forward to it!
Every time I try to put a date around it, I jinxit. Thus, I'm just going to say "soon."
DeleteWill you also be introducing more female League members, cause I believe we only know of two and that's Esper&Vixen. Also Jim finally has an League uniform!!😂😂😆
DeleteObviously there are more League members than I've named, and more female members as well. With respect to those individuals, I suppose I've been adhering to the principle of Chekhov's Gun, which says something like "If you have a loaded gun in a scene, at some point it has to go off." (In other words, every scene has to be relevant.) I haven't had a big role for those other League members, so - according to the principle of Chekhov's Gun - if I make mention of them but don't really involve them in the plot, I'm probably causing readers to have certain expectations that won't be met.
DeletePersonally, stories that don't adhere to this principle don't bother me. I read a book once where the main character got some information by a calling a company's customer service line, then he and the service rep got into a bit of a philosophical conversation. I didn't mind because it was the natural outgrowth of the discussion that they'd had. In other words, although it didn't really add to the plot, it was the type of conversation that might naturally occur in the "real world." I've had a number of those, but they often end up being outtakes - I cut them from the final version of the book. (In fact, I cut one from KS #6 today.)
Long story short, I do have plans to mention other League members of both genders, but the females will probably feature more prominently first in a Vixen short story that's kicking around in my brain, but who knows?
And since Jim have so many powers, does that mean that all of his abilities have limitations, like his telepathy he says he can only read surface thoughts and can't really dive into people's minds like someone whose main power is Telepathy
ReplyDeleteI can't speak for his other powers but as far as his telepathy goes, his limitation is more of a personal limit. In the first or second book he says he is capable but it makes him sick so he doesn't do it. Think he equates a deep mental dive to swimming through sewage.so it's less a limit and more a phsycosymatic reaction.
Delete"Guest" is pretty much on the money concerning Jim's telepathy. I suppose you could think of it as something like a peanut allergy. A person who's allergic can handle peanuts in terms of touching and holding them. (This might be nalogous to Jim looking at surface thoughts.) Also, there's nothing that prevents them from physically eating peanuts, but doing so will cause an adverse reaction - e.g., maybe they break out in hives. (This would be the equivalent of Jim doing a deep dive into someone's mind. He has the ability, but suffers an adverse reaction.)
DeleteBut in Revelation Jim States and I quote "It also didn't seem to matter that I really CAN'T read minds as most telepaths can. While I can broadcast my own thoughts, I CAN ONLY read the surface thoughts of others and what they willingly want to share. I'm Not really capable of rooting around in their brains for information they don't want to divulge." End quote now I know that your trying to finish the KS#6, Which I'm so pumped for, but the wording could've been better if you didn't want Jim to seem he has limitations.
Deletemaybe if you didn;t respond to every comment the book would be done. my health is very poor and would like to read kid sensation before i die. you can do all the other characters and start new series after the john indigo morrison carrow arc is finished. you sound like george rr marten with commiting to a release date and/or working on other books. stop making excuses and pissing your fans off. GET IT DONE Hardman! p.s. reponding to this commit will jist piss everyone off more
ReplyDeleteIt's cool. I don't take this stuff personally and just viewed it as a fan trying to get/keep me motivated.
DeleteOdds are that if you could control yourself better you’d have better health. I personally hate waiting but would rather have something that was done right than was just put together.
DeleteI second unknown. I am not sick but that is not an excuse to act like a tool. And it is not like it takes more than a minute to respond to comments. As to it taking so long, I am waiting just like everyone else for the next ks book. Hardman has apologized. He does have a real job outside of writing, as he has said many times and sometimes that makes his timelines slip. That is why he hasn't set a hard release date. So chill. He will get it out when he gets it out.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the support, but again, I don't take these things personally. I get that people have been waiting on the book and I'm grateful for the patience they've shown. Thankfully, we're almost to the Promised Land in that regard.
DeleteI can see both sides of the argument. TBH rich you could word your argument better and try being nice but the point stands. KS is his most popular storyline (just look at how hundreds of people are still commenting on this months after it was first published but the posts about other stories are barely at 20 comments) and many of his fans get antsy when he starts posting and commenting about other storylines and book ideas when he keeps promising KS, it makes them think he's forgotten about it or is putting it aside. This is not the case and it is fairly well known now the book will be coming out very soon, at most a month.
DeleteTo those of you who replied harshly try to answer with your brain not your emotions, think your replies through and don't think people beneath you if they have opposing opinions, they might actually have a point behind the rant. You too Rich.
Be patient. Think.
I was totally being a dick and disrespectful towards Hardman, but he took it the way it was intended as motivational. It is hard to convey emotional context in a text. I spoke to Hardman as I would a friend and apologize to for any offensive given to him or his fans. I have been paralyzed for 15 years and place a tremendous value on good stories that allow me to escape my crippled body. The best part of his writing is the humor. It's so great to laugh! p.s. Mr Kevin Hardman stop fucking around and finish the book (meant with admiration and anticipation).
