SENSATION
A Superhero Novel

Like millions of other kids, Jim grew up wanting to be a superhero.  Unlike most of his contemporaries, however, Jim actually had the goods: a plethora of superpowers that would have been the envy of any meta on the planet.  But when his tryout with the Alpha League - the world's premiere group of supers - goes disastrously wrong, Jim basically becomes an outcast.

Two years later, Jim is still bitter about what happened to him.  However, he soon finds himself the centerpiece in an odd turn of events that gives him a second chance at his dream.  But nothing is as easy as it sounds, as Jim soon discovers.  Among other things, he's made an enemy of a prospective super teammate, he's being stalked by an unknown pursuer, and a shadowy cabal bent on world domination has identified him as the only obstacle to their plans.

It's a lot for one super to handle, even with a smorgasbord of abilities.  But if saving the world was easy, everyone would do it...

WARDEN
Book 1:  Wendigo Fever

Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting ordinary people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men.  However, despite being descended from a long line of Wardens, 16-year-old Errol Magnus believes it to be the absolute worst job on the planet:  How could a single occupation simultaneously be the most boring, abominably stupid and extraordinarily dangerous profession imaginable?

But when his older brother Tom - the current Warden for their region - goes missing, Errol has no choice but to enter the Badlands (where monsters abide in mind-boggling numbers) to find him.  During his search, Errol crosses paths with - and finds himself hunted by - the legendary Wendigo, a monster with preternatural strength and speed, as well as enhanced sight, smell and hearing...and an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

Now Errol must do the impossible and not only escape from the monster (something no one has ever done before), but also avoid the unearthly legacy it leaves on all its victims: a terrifying curse known as Wendigo Fever.

At the same time, however, he is approached by a mysterious government organization that wants Jim to work for them - and they won't take "No" for an answer.

Moreover, at the Academy itself, an insidious and highly contagious virus is running amok through the student population, striking at the heart of their abilities. Students are losing control of their powers, with lethal consequences...

Now, in addition to evading the machinations of government agents, Jim must solve the mystery behind the virus - and how to stop it - before every super everywhere becomes fatally infected.

A Kid Sensation Story

Everyone needs help occasionally - even supers with amazing powers - and Jim (aka Kid Sensation) is no exception. Having previously received aid from a young psychic named Rudi, Jim feels obligated to return to the favor and rescue her from the federal facility where she’s being held.

But breaking into a top-secret, heavily-fortified government installation is never walk in the park, especially when said installation has top-of-the-line security systems, trigger-happy guards, and its own team of formidable supers. It will take a bold and audacious plan to get Jim - and the friends who volunteer to help him - inside.

Unfortunately, breaking in is only half the problem (and the easy half, at that); they also have to break back out…

Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting the people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men.

Despite his personal dislike for the job, Errol Magnus has faithfully carried out the daunting (and singularly dangerous) duties of Warden for their region in place of his missing brother Tom. Truth be told, despite his reluctance in accepting the role, there is no one better suited for it in terms of knowledge, training and skill.

Arriving home after an extended sojourn in the Badlands, where monsters are as common as blades of grass, Errol longs for just a single day to pass that doesn’t require him to put his life in danger. His desire for a respite, however, is complicated by two things: the arrival of a mysterious troupe of performers - and the appearance of a bloodthirsty creature that kills its victims in a horribly gruesome fashion.

Now Errol must determine what connection - if any - exists between the troupe and the killings, as well as find a way to stop the monster before the body count goes any higher.

A Kid Sensation Novel

Having a surfeit of super powers is great for battling bad guys and saving the world, as Jim (aka Kid Sensation) is finding out, but less useful in dealing with day-to-day situations - like bonding with his superhero father, adjusting to a team environment, and coping with what might be perceived as a growing rivalry between himself and another teen super. On top of all that, despite having a serious girlfriend, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to a new female super he's just met.

At the same time, some villain has just gotten himself a new toy: an unknown weapon of tremendous power that is able to strike without warning, causing unprecedented destruction and loss of life. Perhaps more terrifying, the wielders of this weapon make no demands and issue no threats; they simply attack. Even the Alpha League, the world's greatest superhero team, is not immune, suffering an assault on their very own doorsteps.

It quickly becomes clear that the only way to stop this new evil is from within. With his unique abilities, Jim is the only person capable of infiltrating the enemy's ranks. It's up to him to figure out who is behind these attacks, what they want, and find a way to stop them - and their secret weapon - before they bring the world to its knees.

Infiltration is available at Amazon.comBarnes&NobleKobo, iTunes, and Smashwords (for Sony, et al.).

WARDEN (BOOK 3: ATTACK OF THE ASWANG)

Part lawman, part tracker and part magician, the Wardens are monster-hunters - tasked with protecting the people from the various, nightmarish creatures that have invaded the world of men.

For most of his life, 16-year-old Errol Magnus categorically rejected the idea of being a Warden. Growing up right next to the Badlands, he encountered enough bloodthirsty monsters in the ordinary course of events; he’d never seen much sense in assuming a post that required you to actively seek them out.

Recently, however, while competently and capably serving as Warden on behalf of his missing brother Tom, Errol’s had a change of heart. Now, for reasons of his own, he desperately wants the position. Unfortunately, being officially appointed Warden not only requires that Errol’s skills be tested by his peers, but that he also make a perilous journey to the city of Apolos in order to be examined by the High Warden himself.

Traveling with a group of colleagues, Errol thinks all danger is behind them once they reach the safety of the city. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Something has followed them out of the Badlands, and - one by one - his traveling companions are being viciously slain by something…inhuman. It’s up to Errol to find the creature and bring its killing spree to a halt, before he himself winds up the next victim.

Warden (Book 3) is available at Amazon.comBarnes&NobleKobo, and iTunes.

Fringe Worlds #1

Master Sergeant Gant Maker was a highly-decorated and well-respected Marine - until his last mission left him as the sole survivor of an encounter with a vicious race called the Vacra. Served up as a scapegoat and drummed out of the military, he has since lived a life of seclusion with only an adopted alien as a companion.

Now the Vacra have returned. As the only person to have ever faced them and survived, Maker is reinstated in the Corps and given the onerous task of finding this enemy on a world located at the edge of known space. Assisting him is an unlikely band of military rejects, including a blind sharpshooter, an unstable psychic, and a genetically-engineered killing machine who refuses to fight.

Given that the Vacra have superior weapons and technology, Maker recognizes that his team is at a distinct disadvantage. But Marines are nothing if not resourceful, and Maker has an audacious plan that just may level the playing field – if it doesn’t get them all killed.

A Kid Sensation Novel

The pressure of being a super – especially a teen super – can get to anyone, as Jim (aka Kid Sensation) has witnessed firsthand. Now he wonders if he himself might be succumbing to the strain in some way, as he can’t shake the feeling that he is now being watched by some new stalker. Moreover, despite his wide slate of powers, he hasn’t been able to discover to a single clue to substantiate the existence of this potential new enemy, making him wonder if it’s all in his head.

Looking forward to a few days of R&R and hanging out with his friends, Jim’s downtime is interrupted by the unsettling news that Alpha Prime, the world’s greatest superhero (and Jim’s father), is missing. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Jim finds his world rocked by an even more ominous revelation: his deranged half-brother, Paramount, has escaped from confinement in a maximum security installation.

In the course of investigating these events and trying to ascertain what connection, if any, there is between them, Jim becomes privy to information concerning a potent alien device capable of laying waste to the entire planet. But he’s not the only one - an enigmatic villain wants the alien technology for his own purposes, and it’s up to Jim to find a way to stop him before the world pays the ultimate price.

A Kid Sensation Novel

As the grandson of the alien princess Indigo, Jim (aka Kid Sensation) has always known that, technically, he’s royalty. That said, he’d be the first to admit that he’s never lived any kind of regal lifestyle – no titles, no castles, no crown jewels… However, the arrival of a courier from his grandmother’s homeworld changes all of that in an instant.

By royal edict, Jim is summoned “home” to the distant planet Caeles in order to claim an alien inheritance. Unfortunately, this is no warm and cuddly family reunion. Caeles is a hotbed of political intrigue, and Jim’s arrival has widespread ramifications. Not only are several factions attempting to utilize his very existence as leverage to advance their own agendas, but Jim himself is required to submit to an archaic trial known as a prexetus. Moreover, while some are content with simply trying to use him, it quickly becomes apparent that at least one shadowy individual just wants Jim out of the way – quickly, completely, and permanently.

Light years from Earth, with little family and fewer friends, Jim faces the daunting task of finding an enemy whose ultimate purpose is unknown and whose methods are extreme. Complicating matters even further is the fact that Jim’s much-heralded super powers are glitching, making him incredibly vulnerable for perhaps the first time in his life.

    3. Absolutely! There are at least two more books planned in the series, and possibly more if - at that point - it doesn't feel like Kid Sensation has overstayed his welcome in the minds of readers.

    1. Thanks, it's always a pleasure to hear that readers like my work. Your comment about his powers is something that I’ve heard before. In my defense, all I can say is that I simply wrote the character the way I saw him in my head.

With respect to a weakness, it’s something that I’d have to give careful thought to. Basically, I’m afraid that if I introduced something like that, it would become a gimmick that I’d be tempted to rely on over and over again as a plot device, like a detective who always loses his gun so that he has to fight the criminal mano a mano.

Still, I won't go so far as to completely rule it out. It's a big universe, after all, and anything can happen.

  4. Love the Kid sereis. Everyone might say he is to powerful but really he is just very mobile. He can go where he wants and so far he has no destructive power. If he wasn't squeamish about reading deeper into others minds he'd be even more powerful. I think your on the right track.

    1. Thanks, I'm glad you like the series and I appreciate the encouragement and support. You've alluded to some of the key attributes of the character in that much of what he can do can easily be stamped as either defensive tactics OR offensive capabilities. (For instance, teleportation can allow you to retreat or give you the element of surprise.) I like to think that the versatility of his power set is part of his appeal. Regardless, I'm glad the series is resonating with readers, and hopefully that will be the case with any future releases.

    1. Joao,

I love your enthusiasm for the series! I've already started on the next book, but I'm currently trying to wrap up the the third book in my Warden series. After that, the plan had always been to get the next Kid Sensation book out. However, there's a sci-fi story I started on that's been gnawing at my brain lately. I'm probably going to have to scratch that itch a little (ie, write at least a bit more of it) before I turn to Kid Sensation or it will drive me crazy. In short, I don't have a definite timetable at the moment, but I will write/publish it as fast as I can.

  15. Kevin,

I have read all four of the Kid Sensation Books (several times) and really enjoy the story line and appreciate the time you have put into the series. I do not think you need to give Jim a fatal flaw. You have given him a great power set but there are powers that he does not have so he does have to be aware of his approach when confronting his opponent(s) and situations. You have also given him a conscious and awareness of his actions and consequences of what could happen, which could be a considered a flaw for someone in a lot of those situations. Great job. While I do know that you cannot keep a book series going forever I hope the Kid Sensation run will last for awhile. Great job.

Thanks for the compliments; I'm glad you're enjoying the books. As to Jim's coeval cognizance, it's not consciously controlled. In other words, it's not an ability that he can utilize "on demand" - it happens when it happens. That said, I do anticipate those specific abilities being utilized in a future Kid Sensation novel.

The problem is that there's another novel that's been scratching away at my brain, so I believe I have to get it out first (even though that's not the order I originally intended) just to be able to think straight. I actually started writing it a while back and at this juncture I've got a lot of the story already worked out in my head, so it's just a matter of getting it all on paper.

  31. Howdy again Mr. Hardman. Any update on the book status?

On another note, I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. What are the races of the main characters family in Kid Sensation? I know Jim's maternal grandfather is Black, his maternal Alien Grandmother was essentially White Elvish looking humanoid with "porcelain-like skin". I'm assuming his mother looks mixed race with skin slightly darker than Jim's. What race is Alpha Prime? I tried re-reading it but all I saw was Hollywood good looks unless I'm missing the line where his race/skin color are mentioned. I'm assuming he's Caucasian, which would explain Jim's lighter skin color than his mother. I only ask because I like to have good visual images of characters in my heads. Does Jim pass as tanned Caucasian or does he look mixed?

To me, as good as Alan Rickman's moive Snape was, he was missing facial hair. Best casting of all time, where the character was brought to life....was J. K. Simmons as J Jonah Jameson. The man is the spitting image.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm still grinding away on the book and will probably post an excerpt soon. As to completion, that will be some time in December, but bearing in mind editing, cover art, etc., publication is likely to be in January.

Jim is racially ambiguous, which is meant to imply that - in his natural state - he is difficult to classify racially. (Think Vin Diesel, The Rock, etc.)

I liked Rickman as Snape; I thought he did a great job. Simmons was excellent as JJJ, but sometimes he felt a little manic.

Also, as Rune is a "physical embodiment of certain....powers", can he take on whatever appearances he desires. Since he's decided to live on Earth, did he simply choose to look Human?

  40. Ahhh...Rune. Outside of Mouse (and Kid Sensation, of course), he's probably the character that I get the most queries about.

As to the Nagrep being aware of his status as an Incarnate, that's a good question. Since I don't believe Rune's mentioned in KS#4, I'd posit that they timed their attack to occur when he wasn't on Earth.

Believe it or not, Rune's actually a character I imagined well before even the first Kid Sensation novel. As such, he's always been destined (predestined, you might say) to have his own book, so much his story will be told then.

    1. I like how you only answered part of my question. Arg. Why do you do this to me? Must have book about Rune.
Another question. I believe it's mentioned that meta powers showed up at the same time Alpha Prime appeared from another dimension (I'm not just making that up right?) Anyway 2 things. First Metatron's hypothesis that there were people who arrived earlier. Why didn't super powers appear then (when the guy with the name which sounds like that other guy might have been sent over...you know). And where do Elves come from? Are there other humanoids on the planet? Are they extra dimensional too or from a pocket dimension or some connected realm? Etc etc.

      Delete
  41. LOL. I'm an ex-military guy, so I'm trained to give evasive answers. (Also, I'm trying to avoid giving too many spoilers, as I know some people absolutely hate that.) The working title of Rune's book is "The Inscrutable Rune" (yes, I've actually started it), but right now it's probably last in the queue with respect to order of completion.

As to when meta powers showed up, I'd argue that Alpha Prime is discounting stories from the far past of people with unusual abilities (Hercules, Merlin, etc.) - quite likely because there's no confirmation that they're anything more than myths and legends. In short, he's probably - and somewhat arrogantly - assuming that supers didn't really appear until he and Megaton arrived because their existence wasn't documented and confirmed until the modern era.

Regarding Elves, theories are still bouncing around as to their origin. (My wife has opined that they come from the North Pole...) That said, there are indeed other humanoids on the planet.

  69. I think Jim spent so much time fixated on the age differences between his grandparents that he seems to have forgotten about his own parents, especially since his dad was friends with his grandparents before his mom was even born.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would posit that Jim subconsciously adopts certain widely-accepted social mores and conventions - eg, it's okay for an older man to date a much younger woman, but the opposite is somehow verboten. (Also, I'd argue that he's transposing his grandparents' relationship onto his own somewhat-similar predicament, which he's obviously not wild about.)

      Delete
    2. I still think Jim should find his parents situation a little more creepy as his father knew his grandparents before his mom was even born, I imagine Jim's grandfather before even Indigo came to earth, and was probably there either for Jim's mom's birth or at least sent a card or something. (Superheroes seem like one big family and with the news surrounding the relationship between an alien and a human, I would imagine he was at least informed) Jim's grandparents only met when they were both adults from their respective species.

      Delete
    3. I suspect that Jim thinks about the aspect of his parents' relationship that led to his birth about as often as the rest of us (which in my case, is never...). His father was never around, so I doubt that he's connected the dots in that particular way. Thus, for him, the things you mentioned probably only exist in the abstract.

  70. Mr. Hardman,
I just finished your most recent novel in the "Kid Sensation" Series, and I gotta say, I loved it. I started out reading the series because it was free on prime and it looked interesting, and it most definitely delivered. With each book you have improved your writing and expanded upon the plot and universe in which the story takes place, and with Coronation there are so many places you could take the story. I will be happily anticipating your next release, and plan on reading your Wardens series too.Just out of curiousity, any hints about the upcoming events in Jim's life, or future events? I'm dying to know how grown up Jim ended up teaching Plavarice a million years in the past. Anyways, have a great day, and keep up the excellent work!

Suffice to say that Jim obviously has a lot of adventures ahead of him.

    2. I have to agree with Connor. I started your "Kid Sensation" series a couple of days ago and just finished "Coronation." I have to say that I've really enjoyed it. It went from being kind of a guilty pleasure reading with the first book, to readying late into the night because I was so engrossed by the third book. In fact I was really sad to find out that I had reached the conclusion of the available books, but will be eagerly awaiting future releases.

I have a few thoughts that I'd love you share, but don't want to seem critical since I've very much enjoyed your work. So I will just say one thing. Jim is gonna need a new super name soon. He has accomplished too much and matured too much to be called Kid Sensation much longer. I'm probably projecting a bit here, cause it would irritate me to no end to be called kid once I had hit my 20s.

      Delete
    3. I'm glad you enjoyed the books, and I have no problem with criticism - as long as its positive! ;>) As to a name change, it's something that's occurred to me. (After all, it's difficult to imagine Jim as, say, an old man and still being called "Kid.") I've got some thoughts on the subject, but I don't think it's an issue with a great deal of immediacy.

  71. Hi I love that you obviously welcome feedback. Not all writers are interested (or brave!) enough to find out what their readers think.
I have loved the books and look forward to the story continuing. My only feedback would be the artwork.... I think a more modern style would make the books appeal to a wider audience. Not a criticism, just an observation.

    1. I'm glad you are enjoying the series. An explanation for Jim's array of powers is something I've only considered in passing. That said, I do have a storyline in mind that relates to it, but for now we'll just chalk it up to good genes.

The Mouse book is in the hands of my editor and will be called "Mouse's Tale: An Alpha League Supers Novel." It's a bit more adult in tone, and depending on how it's received I may be enticed to write more stories about the Alpha League and its members, many of whom haven't even been mentioned in the Kid Sensation series.

  88. Hey! Love the Kid Sensation series. Haven't tried Amped yet (for some reason I just can't seem to bond with Electra) but Mouse's Talent intrigues me.

Of course, I'd rather be reading Kid Sensation 6. I think Coronation was the best one yet! I can't wait to see Jim introduce Electra to his new fiancé lol and to then explain that they might not be getting married until Electra has died of old age, but in the meantime Caelesian law doesn't prohibit multiple marriages so would she still please date him? I'm literally laughing out loud just writing this!

I do agree that he's due for a name change soon. KS was foisted upon him by the media, and after the Weeping Boy fiasco... yeah. You mentioned finding it difficult to imagine Jim as an old man with the Kids appellation, I just find it hard to imagine Jim as an old man. He's half extra dimensional immortal, and one quarter extra terrestrial who ages at one fifth the rate of a human. His brother had a theoretical lifespan measured in millenia and Jim's should be 25% longer than his by dint of his Caelesian blood. Add to that his new healing power (that he obviously learns to control since his ancient past self allegedly had the ability to heal his warriors) also seems to heal the effects of aging, and Jim'Shore supposed to get old at some point? Just saying.

    1. Thanks for the compliments. Book 6 is in the works, and some of the things you touch on will, of necessity, be addressed. Others will have to wait for future books in the series. (If I tried to cram it all into one tome it would end up being about 1000 pages long.)

      Delete
    2. Don't let that stop you; I love 1000 page books. 😉

We'll, I suppose waiting on Old Man Jim isn't such a hardship, and waiting for a new name might be necessary. Introducing his girlfriend to his fiancé is anot important plot point though (assuming he returns to Earth in the next book), so I still look forward to that.

One thing I assumed on my first read of Coronation (and assumed again on my recent re-read) that I began to doubt on further thought, is the matter of succession. The Queen was being pressured to choose an heir, and was wanting to form an alliance with House Nonpareil. After hearing what Vicra saw on his jaunt to the future, I just assumed that Jim was chosen as the Heir Apparent, but it wasn't specifically stated. Is that going to be cleared up, or left in limbo?

    3. LOL! I just looked at a couple of the thicker books on my bookshelf. "Lonesome Dove" is over 900 pages. One of the "Game of Thrones" books is over 1000. If I write anything that long, I'll be in good company.

As to Jim gaining the Caelesian throne, assuming he might one day be king doesn't necessarily mean he has to be the NEXT king.

I was thinking Wheel of Time, myself. The Song of Ice and Fire couldn't hold my attention. I forgot Lonesome Dove was that long lol (yes I have an eclectic mix of reading interests).

Well that's kind of sad... Vicra's trip to the future was to see himself so it was within his prime, say 150-200 years? Dornoccia should have about that left after the de-aging, so if the Once and Future King (Jim of course) isn't the NEXT ruler, then she names a successor who will then pick him. That's either Norbeo or N'd'go, and if Jim has already replaced them that soon, their time is limited.

If Isteria wants to wait until the Caelesian equivalent of 30 to get married, then that's about 75 years on Earth. Plenty of time for misadventures before settling down.

If Jim does change his name could he not just wait until he is an adult and then simply drop the "kid" part and just go by "sensation" or do you think he would prefer to change to something completely different? I think the world would struggle with this as they've known him as kid sensation for so long now not to mention the book series is named for him which would make less sense if his name changed completely. Alternatively calling him sensation would still maintain a link to the book series name (as the ks series).

    2. Change his name to a symbol and he can be known as The Super Formerly As Kid Sensation lol

Seriously though, there is merit to keeping Sensation since it still encapsulates his plethora of abilities. If he did change it, just do an interview explaining the fact that the name was chosen for him, and he wanted to use a name that he felt represents his personality, or his own outlook as a hero.

As for the series title, there's always a companion series with the same characters and a new name.

    1. Luke,

Thanks for saying such wonderful things about my work. I know I say it often, but there's a real euphoria that comes from readers saying how much they like your writing.

I do plan to release the companion novels in audio. In fact, I plan to do audio versions of everything - even Extraction, which is a short story. As far as a timeline, that's tricky. In an ideal world, I'd be releasing a new audiobook each month until I got caught up. However, that's probably an ambitious schedule when you consider everything that's involved (not to mention the fact that my narrator has other clients - damn him!) ;>)

Moreover, let's not forget that "Amped" needs to be narrated by a female, so I have to go through the entire process of finding a narrator again, including listening to auditions. (Last time I got over 50!)

In short, we're at least months away from having all Kid Sensation-related material in audio form. It will probably be May, at the earliest, before that happens (and possibly June). And that's assuming no slippage in the schedule.

    1. I've started it, but it's not ready for prime time yet. I'm hesitant to give a date because whenever I do that just seems to throw a monkey wrench into the works. I will try to get it out as soon as possible, though.

  95. Kevin, I have been addicted to a few book series over the years. The Destroyer series, The incarnations Of Immortality, The HitchHikers Guide To The Galaxy, The Axis Of Time, and now the Kid Sensation Series.

I must say that i'm a diehard Kid Sensation fan and can't wait till it's translated into other mediums. If and when that happens, make sure you do a J.K. Rowlings and be there to make sure they don't change the characters to make them "more accessible" to the masses.

Your readers have fallen in love with YOUR version of Kid Sensation, not some Hollywood studio's that just read a 3 paragraph summary of him.
